چکیده

In this paper we propose an algebraic method for solving proportional analogy problems involving sequential patterns. In this approach, sequential patterns are considered as elements of an algebra. The gestalt that is assigned to a pattern is represented by the term of the algebra that denotes it. Most patterns are ambiguous: there are diierent terms that correspond to a pattern, representing diierent gestalts of it. When a pattern is perceived as part of a proportional analogy, it may assume a diierent gestalt than when it is viewed in isolation. We consider analogical relations as mappings between algebras and give a formal deenition of the preferred gestalts for an analogy in terms of the simplicity of algebraic terms that denote the patterns involved in the proportional analogy. We conjecture that these terms correspond to the gestalts that are perceived by a human who solves the proportional analogy problem. Finally, we describe an algorithm to solve the proportional analogy problems, which computes the simplest gestalts for the three given terms | taking into account the mutual context eeect | on the basis of which the fourth term of the proportional analogy is determined. Creativity consists in the generation of ideas that are experienced as new | that is, not implied by systematic or routine cognitive processes; ideas that require a leap of imagination. Some approaches to modeling creativity have been presented in Hofstadter (1995) and Indurkhya (1992), where it is observed that new ideas and perspectives are often created when one realm of experience is interpreted using structures from a diierent realm: this mechanism is often referred to as analogical or metaphorical projection. We conjecture that the cognitive mechanism of metaphorical projection is essentially the same as analogical projection between perceptual structures.

Analogical projection in pattern perception

This paper proposes a perceptually motivated method for solving proportional analogy problems involving sequential patterns. Our method is based on an algebraic model of pattern perception that determines the gestalt structure of sequential patterns. The gestalts of sequential patterns are represented as algebraic terms in the model. An analogical relation between sequential patterns appearing ...

Performance comparison of land change modeling techniques for land use projection of arid watersheds

The change of land use/land cover has been known as an imperative force in environmental alteration, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. This research was mainly aimed to assess the validity of two major types of land change modeling techniques via a three dimensional approach in Birjand urban watershed located in an arid climatic region of Iran. Thus, a Markovian approach based on two suit...

Analogical Modeling: An Update

Analogical modeling is a supervised exemplar-based approach that has been widely applied to predict linguistic behavior. The paradigm has been well documented in the linguistics and cognition literature, but is less well known to the machine learning community. This paper sets out some of the basics of the approach, including a simplified example of the fundamental algorithm’s operation. It the...

An Analogical Learner for Morphological Analysis

Analogical learning is based on a twostep inference process: (i) computation of a structural mapping between a new and a memorized situation; (ii) transfer of knowledge from the known to the unknown situation. This approach requires the ability to search for and exploit such mappings, hence the need to properly define analogical relationships, and to efficiently implement their computation. In ...

An Algebraic Framework for Solving Proportional and Predictive Analogies

We present an approach to analogical reasoning which is inherently dependent on abstraction. While typical cognitive and AI models of analogy perform a direct mapping from objects of the base to objects of the target domain, our model performs mapping via abstraction. Abstraction is calculated as most specific generalization of the base and the target structure. In contrast to existing models, ...
